Cypress Wood

Hardest Cypress Wood

Cypress wood is renowned for its strength, lightweight, and exceptional durability, with a high resistance to decay. This wood has a light yellowish-brown color, making it an excellent choice for both exterior and interior applications, including trusses, moldings, siding, trim work, fences, patios, and decks. Thanks to its durability, cypress has long been used for outdoor projects exposed to the elements, such as small boats, ship decking, shingles, house siding, docks, and outdoor furniture. Although it shares decay-resistant qualities with redwood and cedar, cypress is harder and stronger.

This versatile wood has been, and continues to be, crafted into cabinets, fine furniture, flooring, paneling, and exposed structural elements. Despite being lightweight at 28 pounds per cubic foot when air-dried, cypress is moderately hard and works well with both hand and power tools, thanks to its straight grain. However, the heartwood can have an unpleasant odor.

Types of Cypress Wood

cypress woodThe commercial names for cypress often hint at its origin. For example, “Red cypress” typically indicates a coastal origin and a reddish hue, while “Yellow cypress” suggests an inland source. Names like “Tidewater,” “Gulf,” and “Swamp cypress” provide similar clues. Swamp cypress, for instance, thrives in swampy areas and along riverbanks in the southern United States.

The sapwood of cypress is very light in color and constitutes a small portion of the tree. Bald cypress heartwood ranges from pale yellow-brown to dark reddish-brown, sometimes appearing almost black. Some believe that the darker the heartwood, the more decay-resistant it is.

Cypress seasons well with minimal shrinkage, though drying large dimensions can be challenging. The heartwood is typically resistant to decay. Cypress is durable and easy to work with using hand or machine tools, provided cutting surfaces are sharp. The wood sands and planes easily and remains stable over time. Bald cypress finishes well and glues effectively. When left unfinished, cypress weathers beautifully. It fastens well, especially compared to other softwoods, although pre-boring is recommended for nails and screws. While cypress can be resinous, this does not affect its workability or glueing.

Cypress Wood Durability

Cypress’s durability, stability, and resistance to water and rot make it suitable for a wide range of construction and building applications. It’s an ideal material for caskets, piers, bridges, boats, siding, sashes, doors, stadium seats, posts, cooperage, and railroad ties. For interior uses, cypress is popular in trim, architectural woodwork, doors, and flooring. It can also be used for turnery. While cypress is most commonly requested as lumber, it is also available as plywood and veneers.
