What is Cumaru Wood?

Cumaru wood is a high-density hardwood species responsibly harvested from the northern regions of South America. Known for its striking grain patterns and varied appearance, Cumaru, pronounced /Koo’-mah-Roo/, is often referred to as “Brazilian Teak.”

Cumaru lumber is highly resistant to decay and insects, making it an excellent choice for outdoor projects like decks, furniture, pergolas and boardwalks. It’s available with FSC® certification if desired and is competitively priced, often more affordable than many composite decking options.

Durability

Cumaru is classified as a very durable wood species. It is incredibly hard and dense, allowing it to withstand extreme weather conditions and heavy use. Cumaru Decking has a top-tier performance rating and is naturally resistant to decay throughout its fibers. Its high density and natural oils also make it highly resistant to termites.

Hardness

With a hardness rating of 3,340 lbs, Cumaru is more than twice as tough as Oak. The only hardwood decking product harder than Cumaru is Ipe.

Fiber Bending Strength

Cumaru wood has an impressive bending strength of 22,400 psi, meaning it would take over 22,000 pounds of pressure per square inch to break a Cumaru board. This exceptional strength, second only to Ipe among high-density hardwoods, gives Cumaru decks a solid feel with minimal “bounce.”

Density

Cumaru is so dense (1.07 g/cm3) that it will sink in water. This high density contributes to its remarkable hardness and ability to withstand heavy abrasion and foot traffic. Like Ipe, kiln-dried Cumaru decking is highly resistant to wear and tear.

Thanks to its natural fire resistance, Cumaru wood is an excellent choice for residential, commercial, and public decks.
