Garapa Wood Overview

Garapa wood, also known as Brazilian Ash, is a remarkable hardwood that originates from the tall trees found in Brazil, Venezuela, and other South American countries. These trees can reach up to 100 feet in height and have a trunk diameter of up to five feet.

Appearance and Versatility

Garapa wood boasts a stunning color range from light yellow to deep golden brown, making it a favorite among homeowners. Its fine-to-medium texture and straight grain give it a refined look that works well for various applications such as siding, decking, fences, and furniture. This wood is not only beautiful, but also easy to work with, thanks to its consistent grain pattern.

Durability and Resistance

Garapa is a highly durable hardwood with an impressive lifespan of over 30 years. It has a Janka Hardness rating of 1,650 pounds, making it softer than other tropical hardwoods like IPE and Cumaru, yet much harder than traditional options like Redwood or Cedar. Garapa’s density contributes to its resilience against:

• Decay and Rot: Naturally resistant to rot, Garapa is ideal for outdoor use.
• Extreme Weather: Capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions without warping or splintering.
• Splinters: Its smooth texture reduces the likelihood of splintering, making it safer for use in areas like decks and walkways.
• Insects: Garapa’s natural oils make it resistant to insect infestation.
• Fire: Garapa often receives an A or B rating for flame spread, offering additional safety in fire-prone areas.

Maintenance

Over time, untreated Garapa will age to a beautiful light silver color. If you prefer this natural aging process, no additional coatings or sealers are needed. However, if you wish to preserve its rich honey tone, applying a UV inhibitor once a year will maintain its original color.

Garapa vs. IPE

While IPE is renowned for its exceptional durability, Garapa offers several advantages. It is lighter, making it easier to handle during construction, and its slightly softer texture makes it easier to work with compared to IPE. Despite being more manageable, Garapa still provides impressive durability and is a cost-effective alternative for those seeking a high-quality hardwood.
